Bikinis have been banned from the upcoming Miss World pageant in Indonesia to align with the conservative mores of the country’s largely Muslim population.
The pageant will take place this September in Bali, where tourists regularly take to the beaches wearing bikinis. However, there has been recent discussion of banning two-piece swimsuits, due in part to the increasingly vocal nature of Islamic hardliners. In 2012, Lady Gaga cancelled a concert in the country as conservative religious groups protested and called her “the devil’s messenger,” according to the BBC.
Contestants in the 2013 edition of the pageant will don one-piece swimsuits, and some will opt for additional coverage by wearing sarongs.
Organizers from the Miss World pageant have told the press that the decision is respectful of local standards, and was made last year when the event was being planned, and not in response to criticism from Islamic organizations.
