La Perla has been purchased in a Bologna bankruptcy court by Silvio Scaglia, an Italian technology businessman.
Recently, Scaglia acquired the modeling agency Elite through his business SMS Finance, after selling two of his communications companies. The move contributed to his decision to purchase La Perla, and he was quoted in the Star Tribune as saying that “the fashion world is one where Italy has clear excellence. I see the potential with it very clearly.”
Scaglia has stated that he will retain La Perla’s 800 employees and will spend €110 million relaunching the label, which saw its sales decrease by over €150 million during the last ten years.
La Perla began in 1954, and was purchased in 2007 by JH Partners, an American private equity fund. Scaglia hopes to double the brand’s sales within a year, though he has recently been embroiled in tax and money laundering scandals in Italy.
The company has not yet released an official statement on the matter.
